The Origami | A portable CNC, folding-arm laser cutter by Red Ant Lasers

October 8, 2014

The Cool thing on Kickstarter today

The Red Ant “Origami” is the first portable laser cutter with a fold-out arm and no limiting enclosure. Laser anywhere!

David, Scott, Ollie, and Mike met at Techshop Pittsburgh when it first opened in March 2013.  They all came from different backgrounds, using the resources at Techshop for all sorts of different projects, but what brought them together was an exciting idea Ollie hatched:  making a laser cutter that you can bring anywhere.  He wanted to etch the skyline of Pittsburgh into his own DIY coffee table, but unfortunately his table wouldn’t fit in the standard laser cutter bed, at least not all in one piece.

Instead of giving up, Ollie embarked on inventing the tool that could complete this challenge: a portable laser cutter.   He knew he couldn’t do it alone, so he approached the three biggest nerds in Techshop.  Scott, David, and Mike immediately embraced the idea and jumped into engineering the prototype.  They quickly discovered that they work well together, and are all driven by creativity, a love of innovation, and odd working hours.  The prototype quickly went from paper to fabrication.

Meanwhile, Ollie approached local start up accelerators and was happy when the Idea Foundry accepted Red Ant into their accelerator fellowship program, providing the group with $50,000 in funding and support. With this funding, the team officially setup the business, applied for patents, and finished the first prototype.  They called it the “Origami”.

Arbor Skateboards :: James Kelly – Burn It Down

Skateboard Crash At 65mph

It looks like there was a glitch in the Matrix, because a skateboard shouldn’t go that fast, a highway shouldn’t act like a Slip’n’Slide and that guy should be hurt a lot worse. Skip to 2:25 for the craziness.

On a rare occasion, you see a video that makes you stop – stop what you’re doing, stop what you’re thinking, even stop how you’re breathing – a video that masters your emotions and alters your vitals. At that moment, when your heart jumps into your throat, and your nerve endings fire, you realize you’re seeing something memorable.

With that we invite you to see a piece we filmed with Arbor team rider, James Kelly, to support the launch of his new pro model. The final product stopped us in our tracks. It reminded us once again why in downhill skating James is called the American Dream. A title he’s been burning down for years with a humble approach and an unmatched intensity at speed.

About James: Born in Petaluma, CA – James grew up riding with some of downhill’s most influential skaters. For years, he’s been showing that there’s no road that can’t be conquered. He has perfected his abilities to skate anything at speed, while building the discipline required to keep calm when the consequences are high. James is no stranger to the racecourse and podium, yet he’s most at home on the hills surrounding his family cabin in the Western Sierras, where this video was filmed.

About the New Model: The new James Kelly Pro Model is the result of years of skating at speed. More hours than can be counted went into the design, refinement, and road testing. The shape reflects the rider, the lines he rides, and serious nature of what he does. The shape has a long wide platform, multiple wheelbase options, and the right amount of rocker. It provides versatility and confidence when approaching speed. Dimensions: length 38.50” – width: 9.75” – wheelbase: 27.00”-30.00”. See the new shape here:…

About Arbor: The Arbor Collective was founded in 1995 and remains a family rooted in the experience and fueled by collaboration with athletes and artists who share a vision for forward thinking design. For more information on the Arbor Collective visit:

Danny Macaskill is a very good bike rider. A very, very good bike rider. So he climbed climbed a mountain near his home on the Isle of Skye and did something that will make you scream with joy and horror.

#TheRidge is the brand new film from Danny Macaskill… For the first time in one of his films Danny climbs aboard a mountain bike and returns to his native home of the Isle of Skye in Scotland to take on a death-defying ride along the notorious Cuillin Ridgeline.
